Your Time: Create A Life You Love!
Aug 28, 2017

The theme for August has been one of simplicity. In my last blog I talked about the importance of ditching ‘Mummy Guilt’; something most of us feel at some point in our parenting journey. Today I want to talk about making time for yourself to create a life you love. When we aren’t wracked by guilt, worrying about what we’re doing wrong, it’s far easier to credit ourselves for what you are doing well.

Living a life that makes you happy is the most loving thing you can do for yourself and everyone else around you. The age old saying about not being able to pour from and empty cup is true. You have to take care of yourself first before you can take care of the needs of others. That starts with making time for yourself. As simple as it sounds, it’s one of the things most mums I know struggle with. Its very easy not to take a 15 minute time out, miss your gym session, replace your nutritious lunch with unhealthy snacks, all to save time.

What may seem harmless enough at the time, becomes a pattern of self-neglect and before you know it you’re stressed and angry at the world, a stone heavier than you’d like to be and feeling sluggish and tired all the time. Hardly the life dreams are made of.

With the end of the Summer holidays fast approaching, now would be a good time to plan a routine for yourself that has time for self-care etched in. Often entrepreneurs are advised to create a schedule with the life they WANT to live and plan work around it - instead of the other way around. It’s counter-intuitive but is a great way to ensure that they make time for doing things important to them like spending time with family and going to the gym. Not only does it allow for living a more fulfilling life, it also helps focus the mind on being more productive during work time.I think most mums could benefit from taking a similar approach.

You could write out your ideal timetable with time included for reading, going for walks, your favourite exercise class, whatever you like. As long as it’s considered an appointment rather than a ‘if I can make time’ engagement it wont be long before you start to feel the benefits of putting yourself first.

You may worry that there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to take several hours a week for yourself. I would say you’re probable forgetting that you don’t have to do everything. Your partner, parents, friends, in-laws and even your children, depending on age, can play a role in taking on some of your to-do-list.

It’s win-win all around. You get to spend time doing more things you love and get some head space and your family and friends get to show their love for your through supporting you. There is power in community and we are capable of so much more when we work together.

Here’s to living a life you love.
