Courage: Believe You Can, One Step At A Time!

Our theme for this month is confidence. In addition to mindset, the second part of the confidence jigsaw is courage. I don’t know about you but anytime I hear the word courage I think of the lion in The Wizard of Oz who goes on a journey with Dorothy and the other characters in the hope that the Wizard will gift him courage. It turns out that in spite of always feeling fearful Cowardly Lion was acting with courage all along. He believed that feeling fear meant he wasn’t brave. He didn’t see any courage in the actions he took when he felt fear – because he focused on the fear.

In some ways we can all be like Cowardly Lion, looking externally for validation or a sign that we’re doing things right when everything we need we already have. Cowardly Lion stopped being afraid once he drank the magic potion and was given a medal. Unfortunately, there are no medals given in the real world to remind us of our courage.

The good news is we all have the ability to be courageous. Being courageous doesn’t require us to be anyone other than ourselves and better still it doesn’t require us not to feel fear. It just requires us to take action in spite of that fear. These actions don’t need to be grandiose. You can start with very small steps, slightly outside your comfort zone. It might be a simple as leaving the house without makeup or trusting your intuition to deal with a matter without running it by someone else.

A large part of being confident is self-belief. In most cases, faking it until you make it is not a bad strategy to follow. Reminding yourself you’re beautiful as you are, makes it easier to leave the house, make up free. Telling yourself you know exactly what to do in a particular situation, you are likely to feel a little more confident in dealing with that situation. Will it be scary? Probably. Will it feel uncomfortable? Almost certainly. Will you become more confident the more you step out of your comfort zone? Definitely!

Armed with a problem-solving mindset and the courage to act even when you feel fearful or are uncertain about the outcome, day-by-day you will become more confident. The more you practice something, the better you become at it. Confidence is no different. What action can you take this week to build up your confidence?
