How To Stay Clutter-Free
Mar 28, 2016

It’s not a full-time job staying clutter free.  You really can do it easily, with a bit of organisation and by keeping on top of it in manageable chunks. A cluttered environment suggests a cluttered mind and a cluttered life. Just like your clutter, ways to become and stay clutter free are all around you. As a time-stretched mum, it’s maintaining your declutter that is often the most difficult part.

Go Utterly Clutter-Free
To stay clutter free, you need to plan. Set aside a small amount of time for it and do a general tidy-up. If it’s not allowed to build up, clutter can be controlled. The important thing is, you have to decide it’s time to go ‘clutter free’. The introduction of small daily habits will help you achieve and maintain a clutter-free environment. Keep surfaces clean and free from clutter. Counters, worktops, bookshelves and tables ought to only have what is meant to be stored on them. Don’t let anyone leave anything lying around on the floor. Instil in other family members this way of thinking too, so that it becomes natural to everyone.

Listing It Out
Look at the rooms of your house as a whole, identify the worst offenders and tackle them first. For each room, make a list of everything that needs doing and break down the process into small bite size 15-30 minute chunks. Do this to tackle one room at a time and whittle down the clutter to either keep it, recycle it, charity shop it or chuck it. If you find that you have a great deal of material in good condition that you need to dispose of, you can even try selling some of your pre-loved possessions in a car boot sale or online. And don’t forget your local Freecycle Network as another option.

A Change of Habit
Build new quick five-minute habits into your family’s daily routine. These could include five minute clear-aways before everybody goes to bed. In this way, you’ll start each new day with a clear environment and a clear mind. Encourage everyone in your household to put things away when they’ve finished with them. If you see things you or they no longer like or use, clear them out rather than putting them back in a cupboard.

Understanding and believing that decluttering isn’t a major time consuming task is half the battle. Don’t be daunted: it’s all about your approach and attitude to it. Once you get into the swing of it, these little tweaks to your lifestyle can make all the difference on your path to an utterly clutter-free life.
