Plan For Success!
Jan 25, 2016

You may have heard the saying, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” This has never been truer than when it comes to success. Without a plan, you lack direction and without goals or a plan of action, you have nothing to measure your success against.

Once you have made the decision to set your goals, many people get overly excited and jump straight in to working towards it without any tangible long-term plan. It often results in a fast burnout and no real sense of achievement because you haven’t considered how you’re going to maintain your ability to commit to your goal with everything else still going on in your life. This leaves you feeling despondent and disillusioned about your ability to succeed.

So begin by listing your goals and breaking them down into small, manageable tasks that will help you succeed. Is something hindering your chances of success and can you work out a way to overcome this challenge? It’s best to do so from the outset so you have a good chance of accomplishing the tasks in hand. Time is so precious to many mums and it is worth taking a moment to plan your busy schedule carefully so your goal and time for personal development can be incorporated.

As an example, if one of your goals is to improve your health and wellbeing, perhaps you could consider walking daily with the children to school or the park. Perhaps you could walk to work or to the bus stop. While it might take longer to walk than drive, scheduling the time into your schedule could see you achieving your fitness goals quickly and easily, ensuring you take daily action to succeed.

It may be hard to begin with and thoughts of just driving when you’re running behind schedule may creep in but it only takes three weeks to develop a new habit. So hold on in there and soon walking will become second nature and, as you start feeling the benefits, it will spur you on to continue. Planning is always the key to success and preparing each day the night before will keep you on track for the morning rush.

A key tip to acknowledge here is how important flexibility and self-encouragement are to keeping on track with your goal. If, for example, you have set a goal to introduce taking a walk each day and on Wednesday you miss taking a walk for whatever reason, then take control of your negative chatter and sense of failure. Try not to say, “Oh I’ll start again on Monday because I’ve failed this week!” Instead celebrate the walk you achieved to do on Monday and Tuesday, as that was two more than previous weeks. Accept life gets in the way sometimes so let go of Wednesday’s walk and begin to refocus on how you can achieve Thursday’s walk! Be kind to yourself and you will always achieve far more. In this instance, six walks in the week is far better than only two because you’ve waited to start again the following week.

If you plan every step of the process, have a clear path of how you are going to succeed and a flexible approach, you will stay motivated. Remember, it is as important to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements along the way so you continue to motivate yourself and celebrate everything you do!
