Create Your Goals For 2016
Jan 11, 2016

The New Year is a time when most of us reflect on our lives, the year gone by and the one ahead. It is a time when a lot of us think about the changes we want to make to our lives, how we would have done things differently and what we can do to improve our lives for the future.

If you find yourself reflecting on your life, the decisions you have made, the opportunities you missed or the changes you can make to improve your life, ask yourself where you want to be in twelve months. Answering this question honestly will help you to identify the goals you want to achieve so you can start living the life you want to achieve.

Begin by listing five to ten goals you want to achieve. They might be personal development goals, such as returning to education or starting a business; lifestyle changes that boost your wellbeing or lifelong ambitions that you thought would be too late to achieve. Once you have made your list of goals, consider which will have the biggest impact on your life and make the most difference to your future happiness.

It is also important to add a specific deadline date to each goal. Be realistic when setting these: it is better to overestimate the time it will take to succeed than underestimate. Being unrealistic can leave you disheartened and reduce your chances of success. For example, if one of your goals is to lose weight, setting a deadline of several months is much more realistic than one.

So how are you going to set about achieving your goals? Improving fitness is a common goal following an indulgent festive period so let’s take boosting fitness as an example. What do you want to improve about your fitness, how are you going to incorporate it into your routine and are you going to make workouts a regular part of your life? Perhaps trying to get to a gym during the week is impossible considering your other commitments so start by choosing an exercise you enjoy, as you will be more likely to stick with it. It could be a fun dancing class with a friend, walking the children to school, following a fitness DVD, regularly meeting fellow dog walkers or going for a gentle jog with a friend or even your children. These smaller goals will help you work towards your bigger goal, which is to become more active by incorporating more exercise in 2016.

There will be a vast amount of questions and different elements to consider during this phase, but it is important to dedicate the time to completing this task thoroughly, as it is imperative for your success. If you have the determination, passion and a clear plan to follow you are more likely to succeed. Remember to set yourself smaller milestones along the way to help keep motivation high.
