The Confident Mum & Confident Child
Jul 13, 2015

If I ask any mum what they want their child to be, their overriding answer will always be “happy”! It’s what we all want to be and knowing our children are loved, fulfilled and content gives us that warm, fuzzy feeling. Yet when these same mums ponder the question a little longer, greater aspirations come to mind, which all surround the concept of being confident and equipped to conquer whatever the future holds!

Confidence is contagious and parents are role models, so the two things go hand in hand. If you lack self-belief and are racked with guilt, fear and uncertainty, it is possible your children will demonstrate similar traits. Here are some great tips that you can confidently use to instil this amazing quality in your children.

Love
All mums understand that butterfly-in-the-tummy, heart-flipping kind of love you have for a child. Some people are less demonstrative or able to show that love but giving frequent hugs, saying the words and being there no matter what all help to nurture security – and therefore confidence – in children.

Praise
Giving praise and positive feedback offers the instant feel-good factor, and provides children with a sense of self-worth. Encourage your child’s efforts so that, whatever the end result, they still feel worthy of your praise.

Sorry
We all make mistakes and it can be easy to go overboard on discipline and reprimands. If you inadvertently accuse the wrong child of spilling a drink, acknowledge your mistake with a heartfelt apology, always ensuring the child knows you are truly sorry. If you get fired up over a minor misdemeanour, explain what caused you to shout. Children are very forgiving and understanding when they are treated with fairness.

Encourage
Help your child to aspire for better results and encourage them to set the goals they wish to achieve. Introduce them to new, exciting activities that could spark interest and a passion. Instil a “try it once” attitude so your child gets used to new experiences and will embrace having a go with confidence and intrigue.

Independence
Probably one of the most difficult things to do as a loving parent is nurture independence in your child, yet it is essential to do so. Simple chores like choosing meals or outfits to wear can help your child acquire important life skills. Avoid talking for your child when someone asks them a question, as this will only undermine their confidence and sense of self. Understanding they have the right of choice will dramatically boost their confidence and self-belief.
