Raising A Self-Assured Generation
Jul 27, 2015

Praise is great for making everybody feel fabulous when something wonderful happens but it isn’t the only way to instil confidence in children. Here are some simple ways you can help nurture the next generation of self-assured adults.

It’s Your Choice
Giving your children choices and allowing them to be accountable for their actions is incredibly empowering. Encouraging children to choose outfits that are appropriate for the weather and the day’s activities will help them learn more about the world around them.

Home Help
Mums often do everything for their children, including tidying their rooms and making their beds. This not only denies the children a learning opportunity but could also lead to behavioural issues and even further down the line, a lack of independence to look after themselves whether it be at University or running their first home. So ask your children to pick up after themselves and look after their own bedrooms, encourage them to tidy their toys away and show them how to do simple chores, praising them whilst they learn how for themselves. This will give them added responsibility and a great sense of their own self. Just remember though: don’t expect them to tidy to your standards!

Get A Hobby
Children ought to be active and healthy, so encourage them to pursue their interests. Introduce them to a wide range of activities to enable them to find something they really enjoy and want to explore further. Explain how they can improve and what is expected of them so they can truly succeed at their chosen pursuit.

Risk It For A Biscuit
Kids can’t be wrapped up in cotton wool! Cuts, bruises and broken bones are all part of life. If things go wrong, let them solve their own problems and deal with the fall out. Life isn’t perfect and failure is part of the ride. The sooner children learn to cope with negative experiences, the better they will be able to adapt should things go wrong, and the more prepared and equipped they will be to embrace and succeed in the adult world.

Your Best
Some children will struggle to gain the top grades, score a goal or win the race. That’s okay: we are all different and not everyone is naturally academic, sporty or creative. What is important is to encourage your child to have a go and reward their efforts. Don’t show your disappointment if they don’t succeed, instead praise them for taking part, their willingness to learn, their progress and their achievements no matter how small and without comparison.

However you choose to boost a sense of confidence in your child, do it with love, encouragement and a positive attitude.
