Letting Go Of Perfection
Apr 27, 2015

There is no single definition of perfection, as everyone has a different perception of what perfection is.  In the same way, there is no one way of being the perfect mum.  Every parent’s situation is unique and you will face different challenges and require different skills as your family grows up. It’s important not to judge yourself by other people’s ideals. Have the strength and confidence to live the life you want and deserve, on your own terms.

Measure For Measure
It is very easy to become caught up in the effort of meeting a certain standard and measuring up to a specific image. Before you realise it, your life can become an endless contest of comparing and competing. It’s too easy to assess and consider other people to be smarter, healthier, happier, more popular or wealthier. It often isn’t actually the case, but constantly aspiring to other people’s ideas of perfection traps you into a life of having rather than being.

Confidence Boost
If you feel confident in yourself, it makes everything easier. A lack of self-confidence can significantly impact on your happiness, which can cause feelings of isolation and unfulfilled ambition. As you relentlessly strive to fulfil the needs of looking after your family, it’s possible to lose sight of your own needs, which can result in frustration, unhappiness and resentment. You may feel your life lacks direction, but if you keep your confidence topped up, you’ll radiate optimism.

Check Reality
Be realistic in the goals you set yourself. Achievable targets are key to achieving your own happiness. As well as improving your self-confidence, it’s important to emphasise the value of the beneficial practice of daily self-care without guilt.  This might not be a day at the spa, but finding some quiet time to relax, even for just ten minutes after your children are in bed, can have a positive impact on your wellbeing. Have the ability to enjoy life’s experiences and be fully present in the moment – enjoy the happy times to their full potential.

Perfectly Achievable
Setting achievable aims will help enable you to enjoy spending quality time with your family, with a mind free of cluttered thoughts. This will enable you to live a life that you proactively control, rather than one that’s controlling you. Planning simple activities, like a family walk or picnic, that bring fulfilment and joy to your life, and trusting your own judgement without worrying about what others may think of you, will make a big difference.

Self-confidence comes from the knowledge and belief that everything you need to create the life you really want already lies within you. You have the skills – you just need to realise how to use them. Embrace what you really want to do, rather than what you feel you ought to do. Enjoy life, despite its challenges and if you believe you can, you will.
