Get The Best From Weekend Family Fun
Aug 26, 2013

Weekends can suddenly disappear into a whirlwind of DIY, catching up with friends and and never-ending piles of ironing. However, the thing most parents want to do at the weekend is spend quality time with their kids. Making time for quality moments with your children can be tricky but not impossible, if you make it a priority.

The easiest and best way to allocate quality time is to mark “FAMILY TIME” on the calendar over three hours on a Saturday or Sunday – and ensure it happens. Do this every weekend because even this short amount of time can help you to re-connect, catch up and have fun. It also leaves time for you to complete all your other chores and attend to responsibilities without feeling guilty about neglecting your family.

Weekend mornings also provide a great way to catch up over cuddles and cornflakes. Avoid putting on cartoons by making up some fun games instead. Your partner will also appreciate this time together, especially if he is out working for most of the week.

Don’t over-think weekend fun. Trips to theme parks, old castles and long bike rides certainly have their place but trying to do something epic every weekend can be exhausting. Try more simpler activities because these are often more interactive and spontaneous: playing in the garden, learning to ride bikes in the park, building a den and reading books by torch light are the moments your kids will really remember from their childhood.

Try to avoid directing every moment of yours and your children’s lives. Recently, in total admiration, I watched a mum encouraging her daughters to jump in muddy puddles! It brought a smile to everyone’s faces. Allowing time for fun really will make you all feel happier.

Involve your kids with weekly chores. Trips to the supermarket, garden centre and rubbish tip might sound boring but they will teach you children valuable life skills. The time spent in the car between trips is also an opportunity to chat and catch up. Don’t beat yourself up for having to do chores; instead make them fun and inclusive so all the family can join in!

Finally, ensure everyone’s needs are met. Try to spend time doing what each member of the family wants to do. This means that everyone will have enjoyed some aspect of the weekend, which will pave the way for an easier, happier week!
