How To Make The Most Of Your Time
Dec 17, 2012

Mums’ Struggles Made Simple [#MSMS]

Thank you for taking part in my Make The Most Of Your Time survey in October. On my blog last month, I offered some solutions to the challenges you have with managing your time.  I will now address the answers to the second part of my survey, which will help to bring order and routine to your life.

vi) Getting enough sleep is essential to boosting energy and recharging those batteries! I asked, on average, how much sleep do you get a night?

Just over half said you get between 6-8 hours sleep but that still leaves a lot of people struggling to get a peaceful night under the covers! You also mentioned how your sleep is interrupted by your children’s night patterns. There may be lots of reasons for not getting enough sleep: worrying about your challenges, trying to catch up on jobs while the kids are asleep, shift patterns or just wanting to unwind in front of the TV after a busy day. Sleeping is vital and enables you to face the day’s challenges with fresh eyes and a clear mind. Give yourself a break by going to bed much earlier than you do now to get that much-needed shuteye!

vii) My favourite part of the week is self-care! I really look forward to the moments I get to focus on my needs, and I always make time for self-care. So, how much time do you allocate to time out?

I was delighted to see that half of you enjoy a few hours a week to yourselves! Well done guys, this is fantastic. However, that still leaves a lot of mums only taking time out once in a blue moon!  Making time for self-care really will change your life. It gives you a focus, something you can truly enjoy and reinvigorates you, giving you a true lust for life. If you are not already enjoying self-care, factor it into your routine now and I assure you it will make a huge difference to your life!

viii) How many of you have support from your family?

The majority of you do have help from your partners but this can sometimes lead to arguments and resentment. If you find this is happening to you, try to have a calm conversation about managing the house and ask each other which chores you would like each to do. Some friends of mine joke that they have ‘blue’ and ‘pink’ jobs! ‘Blue’ jobs include taking out the bins and washing the cars, but her husband is also happy to clean the bathrooms and do his share of the laundry. ‘Pink’ jobs include the supermarket shop, clothes shopping for the kids, and she dusts and vacuums. Try approaching the task of chore sharing in a fun way and you might find it just gets done, rather than becomes an issue between you.

As many of you pointed out, getting the kids involved often wastes time than saves it. However, although this survey focuses on making the most of your time, teaching your children life skills such as cleaning and organising are important too. So, allow them time to learn, as when they become more efficient at doing these new chores it will save you time in the long run! Remember it doesn’t have to be done perfectly!

ix) How do you rate your support network?

In this modern world, most families live away from each other, in separate cities or opposite ends of the country. This can cause challenges for young families who could do with the support from their elders. So many of you live away from your extended families but you do have good friends around you. You may find discussing ways to help each other might be an indirect way of asking for support… Try offering your help in exchange for their time on another occasion.

x) On completion of the survey, you provided the areas of your life in which you’d like more support. I have linked these topics to a blog you may find useful:
