Is Your Low Self-Esteem Affecting Your Family Life?
Jun 11, 2012
  • Does constant juggling of everyday tasks cause you to feel anxious?
  • Do you find it difficult to make decisions?
  • Do you continually wonder what others think of you and your actions?
  • Do negative thoughts encroach on your everyday life?
  • Are you struggling to find balance in your life?

These issues and many more may be associated with low self-esteem, which can have a detrimental affect on your life and your relationships with your loved ones. Many people have low self-esteem and it can take time to overcome but it is a journey worth embarking upon if you want to start enjoying your life and the relationships you share with your family.

Right now you might be totally unaware of the effect your lack of confidence and self-worth has on those around you. This is simply because having little or no self-esteem can leave you feeling low, isolated and alone. Yet living in an environment in which the centre-pin, i.e. you, feels this way causes a ripple effect on those around you. Your relationships suffer and people are unsure how to behave around you.

I recently met a mum whose self-esteem was so low she could not hug her own child. She felt she was not worthy of his love despite being the person who provided 100% for his care and upbringing. Only by realising how much she offered others – at home, at work and in her social life, did she realise she was a valuable person to be around! Her self-esteem soared and her relationships with her husband and children blossomed.

If this article resonates with you, take a moment to consider your self-worth. If it is at an all-time low, assess your life, your aspirations and your lifestyle so you can identify the parts of your life you struggle with or dislike, and create a plan to overcome these issues. However, what you must also do is identify all the wonderful things about yourself and your life. This will allow you to celebrate everything you do and achieve – everyday!

Some aspects of your life to consider include:

You are you
Acknowledge and celebrate everything about you that is unique.

Find support
Don’t try to do this alone – this will only increase your feeling of isolation. Tell your partner or good friend how you feel and ask them to support you as you try to overcome the hurdles you face.

Think positively
Focus your thoughts on all the wonderful aspects of your life. Give yourself a break from the negative issues you face.

Accept compliments
Stop taking other people’s comments as criticism – it is probably not intended in this way. Additionally, if you are offered a compliment, accept it and celebrate it!

Live your own life
Don’t look to others for approval. Identify the values that are important to you and live your life accordingly.

Think confidently
Change your mindset – if you start to think confidently, you will start to act confidently. Try it out and remember how it feels.
