Guilt Fuelled Hoarding: Are You A Victim?
Apr 11, 2011

The accumulation of clutter can be caused by a need to justify wastefulness. Over the years, possessions have been bought that are no longer useful or needed but they still lurk in homes, taking up vital space. Many people find it difficult to do away with such items, be it furniture, clothes or toys, simply because hard-earned cast was spent – or wasted – on their acquisition. Hence the concept of Guilt Fuelled Hoarding begins. People find it difficult to part with their unwanted possessions because it makes them feel guilty for wasting money.

If you find yourself in this situation, there is one cure: RELINQUISH YOURSELF OF ALL GUILT! Not only is guilt a wasted, time-consuming emotion, it can quickly create stress and anxiety, which can be difficult to overcome.

Let’s face facts: it is probably true that you have wasted money on belongings that are no longer – or never have been – used. Turn this situation into a positive one and consider all the space you will reclaim if you get rid of this clutter. You are now taking control of the situation, rather than allowing it and the associated guilt control you.

Some more good can come out of this situation. You can donate your clutter to charities that can truly benefit from it! Alternatively, you could choose to make some money and sell your unwanted possessions at a car boot sale or over the Internet. You could choose another ‘green’ method of disposal and take items to your local recycling centre. All these options could soon result in lots more space around your home as well as giving you a feel-good boost!

If your Guilt Gremlins are still causing you concern, try to imagine how you would feel to live in the freed up space and a more organised home. Elated? Fulfilled? Relaxed? Less stressed? Great feelings, aren’t they? If you put your mind to it, blocked out the unnecessary guilt and got on with de-cluttering your home, this is how you could feel! So go for it, you’ve nothing to lose but lots of space, harmony, happiness and a peaceful home to gain!
