Recently, Empowering Mums has worked with many mums who are dreading the onset of the winter blues. As the nights draw in and temperatures dwindle, energy levels slump, which can leave you feeling low, rundown and uninspired. We understand how easily this can happen but rather than dwelling on the fact that the colder months are upon us, we would like to encourage all mums to keep themselves energised and invigorated by embracing a healthy lifestyle. Here are some of the ideas we have shared of late with our mums to help them look forward to the months ahead.

Get Out There!
Enjoying a long walk with family or friends is a great way to keep fit, reinvigorate you and catch up on life! Not only will your health and fitness levels benefit, but you will also get to spend quality time with loved ones whilst enjoying everything the countryside has to offer! If you’re a city dweller, you can still enjoy the outdoors by visiting your local parks, canal paths or trim trails. Wherever you choose to walk, ensure you keep up a brisk pace to maximise the opportunity to keep fit but, most of all, have fun!

Broaden Your Knowledge.
Many schools and colleges throughout the UK offer adult night classes. If you would like to learn more about a particular subject or topic, find out if such a class is available in your area. Not only will this give you a break from your regular routine, you will learn a thing or two about your chosen subject and meet some new friends along the way!

Don’t Forget Date Night!
We have previously discussed the importance of enjoying quality time with a partner or friends. During the winter months, evenings spent together can be as simple as enjoying a take away or a favourite film. You don’t have to have dinner in a posh, expensive restaurant to have fun. It can be just as enjoyable to relax in front of the TV, share a bag of Maltesers and sip your favourite tipple, all in the comfort of your own living room! Often, there is no better way to enjoy your time together, especially after a hectic week!

Embrace Family Time.
Although you might not be able to get out as much as you did during the summer months, there are lots of indoor activities you can enjoy as a family. You could see a film at the cinema, enjoy a splash about in a leisure centre, have fun at a local climbing wall or simply snuggle up with a good book and read together! Whatever you choose to do as a family, ensure everyone is excited about the idea so you can all have a fun time!

Gym’ll Fix It!
Professional gyms have become commonplace in today’s society. Although they can seem expensive, many gyms are trying to offer cost-saving deals in order to attract a larger clientele. If you think you could benefit from a couple of sessions a week, following a structured fitness programme, this could be a good option for you. Call your local gym and ask whether they offer any off-peak discounts or saver schemes of which you could take advantage. Alternatively, many council leisure centres run various schemes, which may better suit your budget and schedule.

These are just some ideas to help you avoid feeling blue this winter. A healthy lifestyle will not only maintain your energy levels, it will improve your self-confidence and self-esteem. Don’t let the colder weather stop you from feeling your best: enjoy keeping you and your family healthy this winter!
