Severe Burnout Empowered Me To Help Others
Feb 09, 2009

Tracey Wall,, finds helping others is the perfect way to live a wonderful life. Tracey lives in Cheshire with her husband and five year old daughter.

During a holiday on the west coast of Wales, I realised my life was not the perfect picture I envisaged it would. From the outside, everything seemed wonderful. I had a caring husband and a beautiful daughter who both loved me very much. Not only that, but I had a highly successful career working in management in the finance sector. With the support of my family and friends close by, life really couldn’t get much better.

But it didn’t. It got a lot worse. While I was trying to relax with my family, a feeling hit me like a sledgehammer that I was no longer coping with the day-to-day running of life. The pressure to live the life of a so-called Supermum was overwhelming and exhausting.

My responsibilities at work were never ending, with persistent demands and ever-moving targets. More and more pressure was being applied and along with my own role, I was covering several others too. When realisation hit, I knew there was absolutely no way I could return to work – the prospect left me feeling lost and physically sick.

On returning home from the holiday, with my family’s unwavering support, I was referred to a doctor who diagnosed a breakdown from stress and exhaustion resulting in depression. The cause was severe burnout!

I found this entire experience completely debilitating. There was no way I could return to work but I knew I was still the ambitious, energetic woman I had always been. The pressures of life had simply taken over and I had expected far too much of myself. The people who mattered to me had asked nothing of me – it was simply pressure I had applied on myself as I presumed I should have been able to cope with the challenges of being a successful working mum.

During my time of ill health, I was referred to a CBT Psychotherapist who helped me come to terms with what had happened and made me understand that being successful did not mean taking on more and more responsibilities. It simply meant I should live the life I want to live – not one that fulfils the expectations of others.

It was during this time that it became apparent that so many women struggle with major imbalances in life. We strive to be the best at so many roles that we forget what really makes us happy. Following my recovery, I realised that my experiences could help others and empower them to live the life they really want – just like I am now doing.

I began researching the viability of becoming a professional personal coach. Having a future on which to focus – and one that I was so passionate about - accelerated my plans immensely. I could finally see a way of leading the life I truly wanted. Having a business that matched my core life values and beliefs gave me a sense of fulfilment that satisfied my deep desire to help others lead happy, confident and successful lives.

I graduated with Distinction in Personal Performance Coaching from the UK’s leading coaching training organisation, The Coaching Academy. With my academic qualifications, my burning passion to help others and my own personal experiences I realised I could make a difference to the lives of others. Empowering Mums was born.

During my recovery I was able to see how the same issues affect so many women: juggling responsibilities, enduring low self-confidence and self-esteem and suffering from guilt and dissatisfaction.

My aim is to help women, mums and mums-to-be achieve the lives they really want to lead. I want to raise awareness amongst women that they have choices and, by listening to their own personal values and beliefs, they can positively shape their future.

The way we think and what we do with these thoughts every day impacts the way we live our lives. My greatest advice to women is to live with intention, not regret.

My biggest success and achievement in life is two-fold. I am proud of the difference I have made to my own life – the quality and balance of it and the beneficial impact this has on those around me. By establishing Empowering Mums, I can offer other women the chance to make positive changes that improve the way they live their life. Nothing beats the immense feeling of seeing a client develop into a confident, balanced and happy person, fulfilled with the knowledge that they can now live the life they truly want to live.
